Sweden Technical Tour 2010

Description: Mark your calendar, agree funding, save the dates! These tours are a great opportunity to share nuclear knowledge with like minded professionals in Europe.

The YGN overseas technical tour for 2010 will be providing the opportunity to learn more about the nuclear industry in Sweden. Over 40% of Swedish electricity is generated by the nuclear sector and attention is currently turning to removing political obstacles to new build. With a world leading position on the management of used fuel and positive public opinion there is a bright future for nuclear.

Afternoon Tea with Father's of the Industry – FREE EVENT

Date: 17:00 - 19:00 on 7 September 2010
Venue: Sellafield Centre, Sellafield.
Description: This is an opportunity to enjoy a late afternoon tea while hearing first hand tales of years gone by in the nuclear industry. The special guest at this years event is Graham Brightman - a veteran of the nuclear industry who has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge working on some of the biggest projects within the UK's nuclear industry.

Graham started his career in 1954 with UKAEA working as an experimentalist on the Windscale Reactors. Graham witnessed first hand the Windscale Pile fire and took part in the subsequent recovery operation. He was later involved with commissioning work on the Calder reactors, before joining the research team on WAGR. Graham has also spent a number of years working at reactor sites, as well as being involved with decommissioning work.

Graham has had a varied and interesting career and will be spending time discussing his experiences, passing on words of wisdom and answering questions from the audience.

An Audience with.......Sue Ion and Peter Maher – FREE EVENT

Date: 17:00 - 19:00 on 30th September 2010
Venue: Sellafield Centre, Sellafield.
Description: Not sure where you want your career to go? Know where you want to go, but not how to get there? Here is an excellent opportunity to get career advice from two excellent role models within the nuclear industry.

Sue Ion has been a prominent figure in the UK nuclear industry for decades and is internationally recognised as an expert in nuclear fuels. Since leaving her position as technology director of BNFL in 2006, she has remained at the forefront of government decisions, previously helping to advise Gordon Brown on long-term strategic policies.

Peter Maher is currently the Head of the Technical Directorate for Sellafield Ltd and is involved in the continuing development of the Technical expertise at the Sellafield site. Peter is in an ideal position to advise on how to advance your career whilst remaining in a technical role.

Both Sue Ion and Peter Maher are in an ideal position to advise on how to progress your career in the direction that you choose. The evening will be in the style of a question and answer session, giving you the opportunity to address both Peter and Sue in order to gain an insight on the career path that they have taken and how you can follow in their footsteps to reach the top.

An Audience with...Dave Webster and John Earp – FREE EVENT

Description: You will hear from 2 visionary leaders of industry about their career paths. This will include an informal presentation from each about the choices they made along the way followed by a round table discussion with a small audience.

This is your chance to ask questions to two senior members of industry about how you can carve a path to the top.

Rough Guide to Defence Seminar

Description: This Rough Guide Seminar has been running successfully for a number of years, providing an overview of the UK’s Defence Industry.

Via a mixture of lectures and visits to facilities at HM Naval Base Clyde, the seminar aims to provide an insight into the current work occurring within the United Kingdom defence industry.

Central England Branch Annual Dinner

Venue: Oxford Spires Four Pillars Hotel
Description: We are trying to get together a YGN table for the Central England Branch Dinner. This is preceded by an Industry Forum and promises to be a great event.
